The pearl of Africa: Biking to the Highlights of Uganda

Cycle tour into the national parks of Uganda, boat trip on Lake Victoria and with rangers to the endangered mountain gorilla... – Individual and group travel

Tropical rainforest, animal rich national parks but only a few visitors, Gorilla tracking, lion and chimpanzee on trees, comfortable lodges and the friendly Ugandan people; all these are characteristics on the 380 kilometer long bike tour to the beautiful landscapes of Uganda. As always travel is in small groups and guided by the owners of African Bikers Tours, Jens and Andreas, which guarantees an unforgettable African experience. The travel Highlights are: Bike tour through the jungle of the Mabira Forest, the cycle to the rapids of the Nile river leaving Lake Victoria, a visit to an African market, a village walk with local guide, biking along the Nile river, the longest river on earth, a bike safari in Lake Mburo National Park, a game cycle in Kibale Forest National Park, the Chimpanzee tracking with ranger, the Equator crossing in Queen Elizabeth National Park and game drive and boat cruise, the bike tour in Bwindi National Park and the best at the end, the gorilla tracking with ranger.

Tour itinerary:

Day 1

Flight to Entebbe/Uganda. Arrival in Entebbe on Lake Victoria. Short transfer and overnight stay in a guesthouse in Entebbe 2-3*.

Day 2

Drive via Kampala to Mabira Forest (approx. 2,5 hours.) and our first bike stretch through the primary rainforest where we have a picnic and continue on to source of the Nile. By bike we travel along the source of the Nile and finally over the railway bridge built in the 1930s over the Nile. We cycle through Jinja to the market. A 20-minute drive in our safari vehicle takes us to the Bujagali waterfalls. Overnight stay at the Nile Porch Lodge 3-4* (B, L). (40 Km, gravel/tar)

Day 3

We undertake an interesting village tour with the village elders. In a mud hut we have a traditional Ugandan lunch. In the afternoon we cycle along the Nile through fields and beautiful villages. (B, L). (50 Km, gravel)

Day 4

Our vehicle takes us back to En-tebbe. After a picnic we board the ferry with our bikes to Sesse Island in Lake Victoria (approx. 2 hours). Short ride along the beach to our island resort 2-3*. (B, L, D). (20 Km, gravel)

Day 5

Today we cycle across the green island on a hilly road to Bugoma, and from there cross with fishing boats back to the mainland where our vehicle awaits. After a delicious picnic we drive to the entrance of Lake Mburo National Park (approx. 2,5 hours). We do our first bike sa-fari past zebras, impalas, buffaloes etc. to the beautifully situated Man-tana Luxury Tented Camp 3-4* nes-tled in the hilly acacia landscape. (B, L, D).

Day 6

Before sunrise we go on an exciting walking safari with a gamekeeper. After a hearty breakfast at our lodge we explore the National Park on another bike safari to, amongst other places, the shore of Lake Mburo, where we have a picnic lunch. We spend the night in Mantana Luxury Tented Camp 3-4*. (B, L, D). (30 Km, gravel)

Day 7

We leave the National Park on our bikes. After a short stop for supplies in Mbarara we drive in the direction of Kibale National Park (3 hrs). We off load the bikes again and cycle through a beautiful savannah land-scape to Kibale Forest Camp 3*, where we will spend two nights. (B, L, D). (30 Km, gravel)

Day 8

Today we cycle and hike the whole day through Kibale Forest National Park and the hilly-cratered landscape at the foot of the Ruwenzori Mountains. There is a chance to experience some chimpanzee tracking in the Kibale Forest National Park. (US$ 120 per person, subject to availability). (B, L, D). (60 Km, gravel)

Day 9

Cycle past volcanic craters to exit. Transfer (approx. 2 hours.) to the equator gate of Queen Elizabeth National Park. Here we get onto our saddles and start cycling through the Queen Elizabeth National Park may be pass lion and elephant! We arrive at a bush lodge 4* idyllically located on a crater lake, where we can spend the afternoon relaxing. (B, L, D). (40 Km, gravel)

Day 10

We do a morning game drive in the Queen Elizabeth NP on the lookout for the animals, which make their home here such as lions, leopards, elephants and other species. In the afternoon we embark on a boat safari on the animal-rich Kasinga canal and observe the wild animals and birds up close in and near the water, a unique experience! By late afternoon we are back in our bush lodge 4*. (B, D)

Day 11

The journey continues to the Ishasha sector of the Queen Elizabeth National Park. We do another game drive, and with some luck will find some lions resting in the overhanging branches of the fig trees. In the afternoon we continue on to Bwindi National Park. We cycle the last kilometres through banana plantations to the edge of the impenetrable mountain rainforest. We spend the next two nights in the tented camp of the Buhoma Community Lodge 1-2*. Day 12

In the morning we go gorilla tracking with game rangers in search of one of the gorilla families inhabiting the area. The tracking is between 2 and 4 hours depending on the where-abouts of the gorilla family. (US$ 500 per person, subject to availabil-ity). In the afternoon we can relax at the lodge or take a walk/cycle through the village or the rainforest. (B, L, D)

Day 13

A short transfer drive in our safari vehicle brings us to the so-called ‚bottleneck‘ in Bwindi National Park. From here we cycle on a sometimes precipitous mountain path through the stunning National Park in the direction of Kabale. Our safari vehicle subsequently takes us to a beautiful resort 2* on the shore of Lake Bunyonyi at an altitude of 2000m. (B, L). (40Km, gravel)

Day 14

A day drive back to Entebbe and return flight home in the evening. (B, L). There are several options of extending the vacation. How about hiking 4-5 days onto the “Roof Of Africa”; Mount Kilimanjaro 5895m high, or a beach break on the spice island Zanzibar?
