Special Charter Train Tour with Cycling Excursions to the Highlights of Namibia


Experience the beauty and vastness of Namibia while enjoying the highest standard of comfort, safety and excellent service provided on the chartered Desert Express train. See the magnificent 160 km long gorge of the famous Fish River Canyon, the apricot-coloured sand dunes of the Namib desert, the harsh Atlantic coastline, and the animal herds in the Etosha National Park.
The train, travelling the longer distances during the night, affords one more time during the day for the bike trips. The easier cycle routes through the tremendous Namibian desert vary from 17km to 37km and can be shortened according to individual needs. The African Bikers back up vehicle is always in close proximity, should one wish to stop and relax at any given time while undertaking this part of the tour. Two qualified group tour guides will take care of a maximum of 48 guests, and will always accompany the guests on these bike trips. The modern interior of the train, designed by an international design team, reflects the colours and motifs of the country of Namibia. Overall, there are 24 compartments equipped with air conditioning and large panoramic windows, each apartment being furnished with two lower beds, a private shower and a toilet. Choice international cuisine as well as Namibian specialities such as game and ostrich are served in the dining car, and South African wines can be enjoyed in the elegant saloon, whilst observing unforgettable sunsets.
While en route, one will spend one night at a stylish lodge in the Namib Desert and one night at a stylish lodge in the Etosha National Park. During this period, all baggage will remain safely stored on the chartered Desert Express train.
Key players in the Namibian conservation sector will join the guests, who will meet local communities face to face as well, thereby enabling guests to obtain personal insight into the unique success story of nature conservation in Namibia, where over 40 % of Namibia’s surface area is already protected and, more than likely, will be extended in the future. This unusually beautiful tour through Namibia enables one to become acquainted with the landscapes, cultural highlights and outstanding nature conervation and management of Namibia from the comfort of the chartered train.


Day 1 Arrival in Africa

Upon your arrival at the Hosea Kutako International Airport, you will be met by your local tour guide and transferred directly to the Okapuka Lodge 3*. During your first bike safari in the afternoon on the extensive lodge property, one will see antelope and a rich variety of bird species. After the African sunset, the first day in Namibia will end with a typical African barbeque. (L, D).

Day 2 Windhoek – Southern Namibia

After a substantial breakfast, transfer to the beautifully restored old Windhoek Railway Station from where one will depart by train in the early afternoon to the town of Lűderitz. En route, guests will attend a short informative lecture pertaining to the tour as well as the geography of Namibia before the welcome dinner is served in the dining car. (B, L, D)

Day 3 Lüderitz – The Restricted Zone

Early in the morning, the train will arrive at Aus Station. After breakfast, cycle through the fascinating desert, where wild horses can be seen, to Garub (approximately 30km/2 hours). Afterwards, transfer with the African Bikers bus to the town of Lüderitz, thereafter visiting the sand-devoured old German diamond mining town of Kolmannskop. Thereafter, cycle to Diaz Cross (approximately 20km/1,5 hours). German history remains visibly palpable in the town of Lüderitz, making a walking tour ideal. Optional: A sightseeing flight over the restricted zone (approx. 1 hour). In the late afternoon, return by bus to the train in Aus, which will depart for the Fish River Canyon. (B, L, D)

Day 4 The Fish River Canyon and the Quiver Tree Forest

In the early morning, the Desert Express will arrive in Holoog, a rest stop in the middle of the desert. After breakfast, in the company of your tour guide, cycle through the Godwana National Park and its wonderful semi-desert landscape to the Fish River Canyon. Ostriches, kudu and mountain zebra cross your path (approximately 25km/2 hours). A comfortable hike along the edge of the Fish River Canyon affords one formidable views of the second largest canyon in the world having a depth of 500m and a 160km long gorge. Transfer in the backup vehicle to the train, which will depart in the afternoon in a northerly direction to Mariental, stopping en route in Keetmanshoop. From Keetmanshoop, cycle to the fascinating Quiver Tree Forest and the awe-inspiring Giant’s Playground, an incredible landscape of eroded stone pillars (approximately 27km/2 hours). (B, L, D)

Day 5 From Mariental through the Namib Desert

After breakfast, and prior to the arrival in Mariental, time will be devoted to an on-board lecture pertaining to the colonial history of Namibia. Departing by bus, and with hand luggage only, Departing by bus with hand luggage only, you will travel into the Namib Desert. The large luggage pieces remain safely stored on the train. After having had lunch in Maltahöhe, continue by bike through the imposing landscape of the Naukluft Mountains in the ancient Namib Desert, arriving at the Namib Dsert Lodge 3* in the late afternoon.

Day 6 The Sossusvlei Dunes and the Sesriem Canyon

Together with your tour guide, cycle through the fantastic red dune landscape of Sossusvlei (approximately 30km/2 hours), these dunes being regarded as the highest sand dunes in the world. They look particularly beautiful in the morning desert light, and, after stopping to take photographs at. Dune 45, continue to Sossusvlei and thereafter to the Dead Vlei in an all-terrain vehicle. Visit the Sesriem Canyon before returning to the Namib Dsert Lodge 3*. Before dinner, enjoy sundowners and the magnificent views of the Namib desert. (B, L, D)

Day 7 Through the Kuiseb Canyon to Walvis Bay and Swakopmund

Transfer to Swakopmund lying at the coast. En route, stop in Solitaire, which is comprised of a petrol station, a lodge and a small shop, where one can eat homemade apple pie in the middle of a desert! Cycle through the dramatic Gaub and Kuiseb Canyons in the direction of the Atlantic coastline (approximately 25km/2 hours), crossing the Tropic of Capricorn en route. Transfer by back-up vehicle to Vogelfederberg for lunch. After lunch, visit the lagoon in Walvis Bay and see the flamingos, and thereafter, undertake a short city tour by bike (approximately 5km/30 min) through Swakopmund, which is very German in origin. The rest of the day is at leisure in Swakopmund. in the early evenning we are back on the train on our way to Tsumeb. On board you can try the popular dried meat, “biltong”. (B, L, D)

Day 8 The Spitzkoppe to Tsumeb

In the early morning, the train journey will continue in the direction of the Etosha National Park. While on board, a lecture on the history and culture of the Khoi San people will be held. After stopping and alighting at Ebony Station, undertake a short transfer in the back up vehicle to a a road junction and commence cycling along a good track through the Damaraland to the imposing Spitzkoppe (1700m), commonly referred to as the Matterhorn of Namibia. (30km/2,5 hours). In this unique landscape, visit and view the remarkable art of the Khoi San people, while also obtaining personal insight into the management of the Spitzkoppe, the latter being a singular success story peculiar to the Communal Wildlife Conservancies. Travel by train to Tsumeb in the early afternoon. On board you can try the popular dried meat, “biltong”. (B, L, D)

Day 9 Safaris in the Etosha National Park

After arriving and alighting in the early morning at the Km 74 train station which lies in close proximity to the Etosha National Park, undertake the first game drive in the tour vehicle, travelling into the vast Etosha salt pans, the “place of dry waters.” With luck, one will see lion, leopard, elephant, zebra, rhino, giraffe and various antelope species. In the afternoon, check in at the luxurious Mokuti Lodge 4*, the afternoon remaining at leisure, enabling you to enjoy the magnificent lodge premises. (B, L, D)

Day 10 Cycling on a Game Farm

After breakfast, and a short transfer with African Bikers, cycle on the private property of a game lodge in the vicinity of Tsumeb (20km/2 hours). Do not be fearful! There are only antelope and giraffe. En route, view old copper? mines. After a delicious lunch at the beautifully situated lodge, undertake an afternoon game safari in the tour bus in the Etosha National Park, returning at sunset to your Mokuti Lodge 4* for dinner. Day 11 The Etosha National Park to Windhoek

In the early morning, undertake the final game safari in an open top vehicle in the Etosha National Park. This morning safari will be a very special experience indeed! In the early afternoon, return to the train stationed in close proximity to the Etosha National Park, departing for Windhoek after lunch. (B, L, D)

Day 12 City tour and Soweto market at Katutura Township

The Desert Express train will arrive in Windhoek after breakfast, where one will undertake a city tour and excursions to the Katutura Township, the very interesting Penduka Women’s Project, and the lively African Soweto market in Katutura Township. In the evening, enjoy the final communal dinner in a speciality restaurant in Windhoek. Stay in the Avani Hotel 4* in the city centre. (B, D)

Day 13 Departure

Enjoy the leisure time in the morning to shop for souvenirs in Windhoek. Transfer to the Hosea Kutako International Airport in the afternoon either for the return flight home or to join one of African Bikers tour extensions e.g. the Victoria Falls and Chobe National Park. (B)
