Bike and Yoga tour in Eastern South Africa and Kingdom of Swaziland

Together with Sandra Bicker of Yoga-Natura and a local bicycle guide see the game and cultural rich Eastern part of South Africa and the Kingdom of Swaziland. The combination of Sport and Relaxing, Safaris in the famous Kruger National Park, iMfolozi/Hluhluwe and Itala are adventurous. Enjoy the beach and game in UNESCO world heritage site iSimangaliso Wetland Park. Depending on the cycling and Safari programs we do one or two yoga session each morning and/or evenings.

Day 1 Depart from Johannesburg via Dullstroom to Graskop

Upon you morning arrival at the Oliver Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, you will be met by your tour guide and transferred to Dullstroom, a town knwn for its trout breeding, lying at the start of the Drakensberg Mountains.Continue over the Long Tom Pass in the eastern Drakensberg Mountains via Sabie to Graskop, where one will stay for 2 consecutive nights at the charming 3* Graskop Hotel. Yoga in the evening. (D)

Day 2 Bike Tour from Pilgrim’s Rest via Bourke‘s Luck Potholes to the Blyde River Canyon

Visit the historical African gold mining town of Pilgrim’s Rest, cycling onwards to Bourke‘s Luck Potholes, an imposing system of potholes, through which the Blyde River makes its way to the Blyde River Canyon. Thereafter, continue cycling along the Panorama Route to the Three Rondavels view point which affords one the most spectacular views of the Blyde River Canyon. Return transfer by bus to the hotel. (57 km, hg +280m, tar/gravel road) Yoga in the morning and/or evening. (B,D)

Day 3 Bike Tour MacMac Plaetau to Hazyview

The gravel road will lead one along the Great Escarpment and down into the subtropical Lowveld. Transfer in the African Bikers bus to the Kruger National Park to the world famous Kruger National Park, where one may see lion, elephant, zebra, hippo, rhino, giraffe, buffalo, antelope, wild dogs as well as a colourful array of birds and diverse types of vegetation. Overnight accommodation will be in 2* to 3* chalets at a Kruger National Park camp in the south of the park. (45 km, hg +450m, tar/forest track) Yoga in the morning and/or evening. (B,D)

Day 4 Safari Trip in the Kruger National Park

Wildlife is generally very active in the cool morning temperatures. Join a game drive in an open game viewing vehicle with a ranger. After breakfast, drive along the periphery of riparian forests and granite mountains to another camp in the park. In the afternoon, undertake another game drive in the tour vehicle. Overnight accommodation will be in 2* to 3* thatched chalets at another Kruger National Park camp. Yoga at midday/afternoon. (B,D)

Day 5 Bike Tour in Swaziland: From Forbes Reef to Malolotja Nature Reserve

Undertake a morning safari prior to departure from the Kruger National Park to the Kingdom of Swaziland, home to the Swazi people. The bike route takes us from Forbes Reef through the green highlands to Mbabane. Continue through the Ezulwini Valley to the interesting Mlilwane Game Sanctuary. Do game watching on foot or by bicycle – it is completely safe, there neither buffalo, elephant nor other predators in the reserve. In the evening, during a traditional dinner, learn more about the dance, beliefs and customs of the Swazi people. Overnight accommodation for 2 consecutive nights will be in furnished Swazi-styled beehive-shaped houses in the 2* to 3* Mlilwane Game Reserve, when you will fall asleep to the sounds of Africa. Day 6 Bike Tour from Mbabane to Mlilwane

After breakfast, brief transfer to the uSutu Forest. On the quiet country roads, cycle past many kraals before reaching the famous Swazi candles workshop are made to the accompaniment of local music. Continue riding to the Mlilwane Animal Protection Park, while observing zebra, blesbok, impala, ostrich, and, at a dam, hippo en route. The return trip to our accommodation takes as past the Royal Palace. (67 km, hg +400m, tar/gravel road) Yoga in the morning and/or afternoon. (B,D)

Day 7 Bike Tour from Mlilwane to Siphofaneni & Safari in Mkaya Game Reserve

After a brief transfer to Manzini, ride into the the tropical landscape of the Lowlands, where diverse acacia and aloe species grow prolifically. En route, you will pass many Swazi kraals. After arriving in Siphofaneni, transfer by shuttle to the Mkaya Game Reserve. Spot the many black and white rhino while in an open top vehicle. Overnight accommodation will be in comfortable chalets at the Mkhaya Game Reserve bush camp, where you will enjoy a delicious dinner. (62km, hg +490m, tar/gravel road) Yoga in the morning. (B,D)

Day 8 Bike Tour into St. Lucia Township

En route into the idyllic Zulu country in South Africa, one will pass villages and fields of sugarcane. We meet the enthusiastic local Zulu guide at our charming guest house at the 4* Lidiko Lodge in St Lucia, a small town situated in the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park. Together we head for the Township of St. Lucia somehow hidden away from the public. A visit to a local primary school, a traditional healer and a family making placement mates out of recycling material gives you a better understanding. Yoga in the evening. (B)

Day 9 Safari in Hluhluwe Game Reserve and Bike Tour around Mtubatuba

The Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Game Reserve is known worldwide for its white and black rhino species protection program. Undertake a wildlife safari in the African Bikers vehicle. In addition to the BIG 5 – lion, elephant, rhino, leopard and buffalo, the beautiful lowland nyala antelope is also found here. In the afternoon we ride through hilly Zululand to Mtubatuba. (30 km, hg +300m, tar) Yoga in the morning. (B)

Day 10 Hiking & Swimming at Cape Vidal

Today’s goal of this day excursion is to reach Cape Vidal in the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, a World Heritage Site. En route, one may spot elephant, buffalo, duikers, kudu, antelope and diverse bird species. The beach is protected by a reef and, therefore, one can enjoy a safe swimming experience or else to take a stroll along the beach. Yoga in the morning and evening. (B)

Day 11 Bike Tour in Zululand & Safari in Itala Game Reserve

In the former Homeland most activities happen in the outdoors. Whilst riding past numerous Zulu kraals cyclists are an attractions and the kids like to give you the high 5. A short transfer takes you to Itala Game Reserve. During a late afternoon game drive in open land rover we like to find the shy leopard or the nocturnal Bushbabys. Stay in the large reed thatched chalets of the main camp. (37 km, hg + 200m, tar) Yoga in the morning. (B,D)

Day 12 Drive back to Johannesburg

Early morning we head out with a ranger on foot. Different rules apply and you get to learn more about game movements, their territories, insect life and the medical remedies of some of the plants. After breakfast we have a last yoga session before heading back to Oliver Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, the end of this remarkable and multifaceted journey. (B)

Hints

Travel Information:
A moderate to medium level of fitness is required for the climbs on this route. It will be possible to cycle longer distances, because of the accessibility of the accompanying vehicle. During the afore-mentioned dates of travel, the climate in the Kruger National Park and in Swaziland can reach up to 25°C to 30°C. In the summer months, it can also be turbulent and rainy.
