MTB tour from Table Mountain to Addo Elephant National Park

ENDLESS SUNSHINE, SINGLE TRAILS AND REMOTE GRAVEL TRACKS: RIDE ON TRAILS OF THE FAMOUS CAPE EPIC MOUNTAIN BIKE RACE AROUND CAPE TOWN AND THE GARDEN ROUTE. – Individual and group travel

Experience the versatile landscapes of South Africa’s Western Cape by mountain bike. We partly make use of sections of the famous Cape Epic Mountain bike race. On single trails, sometimes on remote jeep tracks we ride in perfect weather conditions through a real treasure chest of plant life. That´s why Table Mountain, the Jonkershoek and Bosmansbos Wilderness area are part of the UNESCO world heritage site Capensis. The average bike distance is about 25 miles and 3000 ft. with a few days being longer. The surface varies from coarse gravel to rocks and roots in the forests. At the end of the trip see the Big 5 and more in Addo Elephant National Park. In Mossel Bay and Plettenberg Bay are of swimming possibilities on protected beaches. We stay in carefully selected guesthouses, hotels and chalets.

Day 1 Arrival in Cape Town and Sightseeing Tour

Upon your arrival at Cape Town International Airport, you will transferred to a comfortable 4* hotel lying at the foot of Table Mountain. After freshening up, join the guide on a sightseeing tour of historical Cape Town: View the old Fort (the Castle of Good Hope), the Parade and the City Hall, the Houses of Parliament in the Government Gardens, the Groote Kerk, Green Market Square, District Six and the Malay Quarter. Overnight accommodation for two nights will be at the Bantry Bay Hotel 4*

Day 2 Visit Cape of Good Hope and MTB Tour Table Mountain and Lions Head

In the back-up vehicle we travel along the Atlantic Ocean to Boulders penguin colony and on to the Cape of Good Hope. Besides blessbuck, bontebuck, kudu and ostriches, cheeky baboons also make their home here. A short hike takes us on a panoramic route from Cape Point down to the Cape of Good Hope. We travel back to the city along the stunning, rocky cliffs of the Atlantic coastline. Bike tour along the lower slopes of Table Mountain, around Lions Head to Signal Hill. Day 3 MTB Trails around Paarl

Transfer into the Cape Winelands. Almost entirely on single trails we bike on Rhebokskloof Wine Estate. Some steep and technical switch backs need to be mastered. If fitness remains carry on into the Paarl Mountain Reserve. Via sandy and rocky tracks, one will reach the bottom of two enormous granite boulders which one will ascend by using a chain. From the top of these boulders, enjoy stunning views of the surrounding Hottentots Holland Mountains. Short transfer to Gordons Bay. (B) (21km, hg 530m, 15% jeep tracks, 85% single trails). Stay close to the beach for two nights at the charming Manor on the Bay Guest House 4*

Day 4 MTB Trail in a UNESCO World Heritage SIte

Short transfer to Stellenbosch. After a short historical tour around town head out by bike into the Jonkershoek Valley which forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Capensis. In the reserve swop onto a gravel road which takes us up higher into the mountain. Be rewarded by a 5 km downhill on a nicely laid out single Trail. Transfer by vehicle, back to the Manor on the Bay Guest House 4* (B) (27km, hg 470m, 50% tar, 25% jeep tracks, 25% single trails)

Day 5 MTB Trail on Oak Valley Wine Estate

The owners of Oak Valley Wine and the Paul Cluver Wine Estate are true MTB enthusiasts, who have created interesting trails on their properties. A great number of fast flowing single trails, rolling hills, and some technically demanding fence crossings, are conducive to an entertaining ride. Afterwards, a lunch and a wine tasting will be your reward!.Thereafter, transfer to Riversdale. Spend the afternoon at the poolside at the charming and historical De Doornkraal Guest House 4* where you stay for two nights. (B) (29km, hg 550m, 40% jeep tracks, 60% single trails)

Day 6 Bike in Boosmansbos Wildness Reserve

Cycle in the Boesmanskloof Wilderness Reserve on jeep tracks and single trails. This reserve is also part of the Capensis UNESCO world heritage site. The vegetation changes from rain forest with lovely streams to spaces filled with ericacaea and succulents. (B,L,D) (24km, hg 710m, 10% jeep tracks, 90% single trails)

Day 7 The Cape Epic Route Mountain Bike Trail

Ascend the Gysmanshoek Pass on a remote trail (770m), while enjoying awesome views of the Indian Ocean as well as views northwards towards the 2300m high Swartberg Mountain with its challenging rocky climbs. After a bumpy downhill ride, and some scratchy encounters with plants. While cycling, the landscape will metamorphose, and upon reaching a farm road, you will pass through lush fynbos before rare indigenous succulent plants dominate the landscape. The aardvark (ant bear) traverses, a very remote trail on a private farm, will be a real challenge for bicyle tires, given the abundance of acacia thorns. With some luck, one might be able to spot giraffe, waterbuck, kudu, red hartebeest, duiker and klipspringer. Overnight accommodation for two consecutive nights will be at the beautiful Rooiberg Game Lodge 4*. (B,L,D) (54km, hg 890m, 100% jeep tracks/gravel road)

Day 8 Relax in the Semi-desert

Use today to relax at the poolside or to explore the environs on foot or by bike. The contrast between the green oasis and the dry Karoo steppe is intriguing. (B,L,D)

Day 9 Bike trail through the Gamka Nature Reserve

After breakfast head out towards the Rooiberg Pass. We enter the Gamka Nature Reserve and on the hilly gravel road you might spot Springbok Antelope along the way. Goat and sheep farms alternate with patches of untouched wilderness. The sky is crystal clear and mountains some 100 km afar can still be seen. Vehicular transfer to the Eight Bells Country Hotel 4*. Day 10 Bike Adventure through the Langeberg Mountains

After a short transfer to a remote farm settlement in the foothills of the Langeberg Mountain, recommence biking along the Cape Epic Route. An easy ascent on a remote jeep track leads to the Attakwas Pass, the route becoming bumpy and rock-strewn while crossing streams en route into the Lowlands. After 25km, the route will join a farm road from where one will be transferred to George and back to civilization. Overnight accommodation will be at the charming Acorn Guest House 4*. If time permits we head for nearby Victoria Bay for swimming and body surfing. (25km, hg 680m, 100% jeep tracks/gravel road) (B)

Day 11 MTB Trails along the Garden Route

A short transfer to Sedgefield and a warm-up while crossing the Homtini Valley en route to the Garden Route Trail Park. A demanding trail with challenging descents offers excitement, and rocks and roots will test one’s biking skills. Transfer to Plettenberg Bay to your overnight accommodation at the Cornerway Guest House 4* cozy guest house, lying only a 5 minute walk from the beach. Day 12 On Single Tracks in the Knysna Forest

Departing from a huge 800 year old Yellowwood tree, one will cycle through dense rainforest towards the Indian Ocean coastline. Fallen trees are witness of the shy forest elephants which still roam the area. After crossing several streams, one reaches the Garden of Eden forest reserve, where one will take a lunch break. In the early afternoon, cycle through the Harkerville Forest on a specially laid mountain bike trail, and return to Plettenberg Bay in the late afternoon. Day 13 Addo Elephant National Park

A 3 hour transfer will take one to the Addo Elephant National Park, the second largest wildlife park in South Africa. During the lunch break, explore the environs on foot and visit a bird hide, a visitor’s hide at a waterhole as well as the Elephant Interpretive Centre. During a safari in an open top vehicle, and with a little luck, one will see elephants, ostrich, tortoises, warthogs, zebra, blesbok, kudu, black rhino and lions. Overnight accommodation will be in charming chalets at the nearby Zuurberg Mountain Village 4*. (B,D)

Day 14 Transfer to Port Elizabeth and Homeward Journey

Transfer to the Port Elizabeth International Airport where this adventurous mountain bike tour comes to an end. (B)

Day 3 MTB trails in the wine areas of Paarl

Today our cycling trip starts in the Paarl Mountain Nature Reserve, the sandy and rocky gravel path leads to two majestic granite summits. We’ll get a chance to climb one of them and have a moment of pleasant views. Next we will visit the Rhebokskloof Wine Estate. We will navigate through the farm on a single trail and encounter a few technical switch backs. After a wine tasting, we’ll be sleeping at a charming guesthouse in Stellenbosch for two nights. Day 4 MTB trail on the Hottentot Holland Mountains

Upon exodus from the accommodation, the bike tour begins on a tar road, we will cycle through the UNESCO nature reserve Jonkershoek, paddle on Jeep tracks and single trails and pass endemic plant species accompanied by the backdrop of the mountains. We will return to our accommodation in the early afternoon to allow time for a tour around the town. (B) (27 Km, hg: 470 m. 50% tar, 25% Jeep tracks, 25% single trails)

Day 5 Bike trail on the Oak Valley Wine Estate

The owners of the Oak Valley and Paul Cluver farms are true mountain biking enthusiasts and have built a thrilling track. The downhills of the single trails are packed with speed, as the up-and-down hills and a fence-crossing guarantees adventure and entertainment. We will be transported to Swellendam, where we will have a well-deserved rest at Aanhuizen Guesthouse 3*. (B) (29 Km, hg: 550 m, 40% Jeep tracks, 60% single trails)

Day 6 Bike trip in Boosmansbos Wildernis Area

In the Boosmansbos Wildernis Area we will be cycling on gravel, Jeep tracks and single tracks, which is a part of the UNESCO nature reserve Capensis. The Blood, Sweat & Gears Pass offers a challenging 2,2 Km uphill battle of 450 am. The vegetation stretches over the wild with streams and budding heathers and succulents hanging over the mountain. We will be sleeping in comfortable rooms of a historic guesthouse with a fantastic kitchen. (B, L, D) (24 Km, hg: 710 m, 35% Jeep tracks, 65% single trails) De Doornkraal Country House 4*

Day 7 The Cape Epic Route Mountain Bike Trail

Day 11 Bike tour along the Garden Route

A combination of tar and gravel on the hilly Cape streets and the interchanging forest and land, where the Knysna Loerie and fertile farms are found, making it an interesting trip. We will be paddling on the gravel surface looking towards the Outeniqua mountains. Highlight is the ascent of a 200-year-old trail which the Voortrekkers used to travel on and which was used in the Cape Epic route. At heights of 1000m does one have the best view of the Indian Ocean. After a fast-paced descent will we reach the stylish and renovated Louvain Guestfarm 3*. Day 12 On single trails in the Knysna Wilderness

The transfer ride of 1.5 hours will transport us to an 800-year-old yellowwood tree. We will be on our way to the Knysna wilderness on a historic lumberman’s road, descending to the Garden of Eden where we will have an afternoon rest. Later, we will cycle through the Harkerville wilderness on a specialized mountain bike trail. The previous existence of elephants is evident with the bent-over trees surrounding the area, which is a close distance from the coastal views of the Indian ocean. A 30-minute transfer will take us to the Cornerway Guesthouse 4*, which is just a 5-minute walk to the endless shore of sandy beach. Day 13 Addo Elephant National Park

A 3-hour transfer will take one to the Addo Elephant National Park, the second largest wildlife park in South Africa. Hints

Travel Information

A good level of fitness and also cycling technique is necessary for this tour. The routes consist of stony single trails with many steep climbs and downhill routes, jeep tracks and forest roads. During the given travel dates temperatures in the Western Cape are between 20-32 °C. Nights are cool.
