East Africa`s Diversity - travel overland from Lusaka to Dar es salaam

Discover the secrets of Africa! On this vacation full of different national parks you travel in a small group (6-8 guests) and experience the natural, biological and cultural diversity of Zambia, Malawi and Tanzania.

Travel itinerary:

Day 1 / 31.08. Off to Africa

Flight to Johannesburg (not included)

Days 2 – 3 / 01.09 – 02.09. Off on Safari

Morning arrival in Johannesburg and a connection flight to Lusaka, where you will arrive in the afternoon. It is an approximately 1 hour flight further to the Lower Zambezi National Park, where you will be warmly welcomed by your English speaking tour guide and taken to your lodge, which lies on the beautiful river. The lodge is in the western part of the Lower Zambezi National Park, one of the most beautiful landscapes in the Parks of southern Africa. Small, yet fine, it offers a wonderful panoramic view where it pushes its way through the other river bank on a mountainous slope. The following morning on a tracking drive through the open vegetation, the varied and rich wildlife of this region is revealed to you. In the afternoon, you take a boat trip on the Zambezi River, which is occasionally crossed by elephants. Enjoy your first safari evening from the lodge‘s terrace surrounded by the sound of the African wildness and allow the first wildlife drive go through your mind once more. (B, L, D)

Accommodation: Munyemeshi Lodge
LSNP Airfield – Munyemeshi Lodge 30 mins

Day 4 / 03.09. To Luangwa River

After breakfast, we leave the park and drive onto the simple Bridge Camp, which is located above the Luangwa River. Along the way we will visit a petrified forest. (B, L, D)

Accommodation: Bridge Camp

Days 5 – 7 / 04.09 – 06.09. Safari pure in South Luangwa-National Park

We drive through Chipata further north to one of the most wildlife-rich parks in Africa. Large elephant and buffalo herds, Thornicroft Giraffe, Cookson Wildebeest, Crowshay Zebra and lions are not a rare sight.
You spend your days extensively watching animals in the park and spending time along the Luangwa River where most of the animals are to be found during the dry season (June to November). Many branches of the Luangwa River are dry during these months and the fish, which are caught in the bed, attract the Osprey and hyenas, colourful Bee-Eaters (Southern Carmine) nest in the sandbanks and large hippo families rope around in the left-over river water. You will spend 2 nights in a beautiful chalet campsite. A further night will be spent in a typical African Bush-Camp and go tracking with the guidance of a gamekeeper. (B, L, D)

Accommodation: 2 nights in Wildlife Camp, 1 night Bush-Camp
Bridge Camp – Wildlife Camp 9 hrs

Day 8 / 07.09. The way to Malawi

In the early afternoon we leave the Wildlife Camp. A long, dusty journey through the bush brings us back to Chipata. Along the way we will visit a Co-operative, where the locals make wonderful fabrics. In Chipata you will be accommodated in large chalets in the Mama Rula Guesthouse, a green ‘Oasis‘ with a pool and beautiful garden. For dinner, there is typical farm food. (B, L, D)

Wildlife Camp – Chipata 4 hrs

Days 9 – 10 / 08.09 – 09.09. Nkatha Bay on Lake Malawi

Today we will cross the border into Malawi, known as the Warm Heart of Africa, not just due to its pleasant temperature but also the friendly people. After passing through the capital city Lilongwe, we reach Lake Malawi near Senga. Driving along the lake and beautiful mountain landscape, we reach Chintache, close to the fishing town of Nkatha Bay, and the wonderfully located Makuzi Beach Lodge where we will spend the next two nights in the large chalets with a view across the lake. Lake Malawi is mainly free of Schistosomiasis, so you are able to refresh yourself in the warm water on the private sandy beach or wonder at the colourful fresh-water fish. Meals can be eaten in the stylish African restaurant or on the lodge‘s terrace with a fantastic view across the lake. You can wonder at the White Osprey on a boat ride on Lake Malawi, as well as visit a fishing village and watch the locals patching their nets and fishing. Close by, you can visit a museum and graves of missionaries who first brought Christianity to the former Nyasaland. (B, L, D)

Accommodation: Makuzi Beach Lodge
Chipata – Makuzi Beach Lodge 8 hrs

Day 11 / 10.09 To the Livingstonia Mission Station

Today we drive from the subtropical, hot lakeside further into the cool highlands of Mzuzu, and finally back to the lake. Along the way, the colourful, lively market is inviting for a stroll. Close to Rhumpi, we will visit a bamboo suspension bridge from the colonial times. On a very uneven track, the road seems to wind endlessly down until the Mission Station Livingstonia, where there is a fantastic view down onto Lake Malawi. The Mission Station, which lies at over 1000m above sea level, was founded by the British missionary Dr. Robert Laws. It was named after the British explorer Dr. Livingstone after missionaries at the former station lower down at Lake Malawi regularly died of Malaria. (B, L, D)

Accommodation: Sangilo Sanctuary/Lukew Cabins
Makuzi Beach Lodge – Livingstonia Mission Station – Sangilo Sanctuary 8 hrs

Day 12 / 11.09. Visit to a coffee farm

An early start towards Tanzania. A spectacular journey takes us back to the banks of Lake Malawi. We reach Keronga, which has a graveyard from the time of the former German colony. Here is where the jaw bone of the more than two-million year old Homo rudolfensis was found. In the late afternoon, after passing over the border into Tanzania (watches should be set forward an hour), we reach the region where the famous ‘Rift Valley Coffee’ is grown. You stay overnight on a farm in a pretty lodge. (B, L, D)

Accommodation: Utengule Coffee Lodge
Sangilo Sanctuary / Lukwe Cabins – Utengule Coffee Lodge 6-7 hrs

Day 13 / 12.09. Through the Tanzanian highlands

After breakfast, whilst driving around the farm, you will experience interesting facts about the planting, harvesting and handling of the coffee and of course be able to convince yourself of the quality of flavour. Driving through an almost European feeling highland with forested areas at over 2000m, we reach a farm where we will stay in beautiful chalets for the night. (B, L, D)

Accommodation: Kisolanza Old Farmhouse
Utengule Coffee Farm – Kisolanza Old Farmhouse 5 hrs

Days 14 – 16 / 13.09 – 15.09. Archeological excavations at Isimila & Ruaha National Park

After breakfast we drive further onto Isimila, a significant excavation site for tools from the Stone Age, with many of its treasures being over 60,000 years old! You hike through a gorge with bizarre erosions.
Following this, another safari highlight is waiting for you, in the remote Ruaha National Park. It is fed by the Ruaha River and attracts innumerable animals. Both in the morning and evening, you will undertake extensive wildlife drives in the park, during which you can see elephants, buffalo, giraffe, Common Eland, lions, hyenas and much more. Majestic Baobab trees leave their mark on the landscape and offer an impressive backdrop. You will stay 3 nights in a wonderful lodge directly on the sandbanks of the Ruaha River. (B, L, D)

Accommodation: Ruaha River Lodge
Kisolanza Old Farmhouse – Ruaha River Lodge 8 hrs

Day 17 / 16.09. Mikumi National Park

Today, a drive full of interesting landscapes takes us onto Iringa. Here, you can stroll through a very beautiful and lively market, before crossing the large Ruaha River valley with it‘s very large Baobab trees and continuing onto the Mikumi National Park. The vegetation changes dramatically: The dry Savanna in the Ruaha Valley breaks the warm, damp climate of the Udzungwa Mountains. The beautiful lodges close to Mikumi National Park are our home for the next two nights. (B, L, D)

Accommodation: Tan Swiss Lodge
Ruaha River Lodge – Tan Swiss Lodge 7,5 hrs

Day 18 / 17.09. Udzungwa Mountains
