Day
1
On your arrival in Johannesburg you are greeted by your guide. We start
our journey towards the Sudwala Caves in the Eastern Drakensberg. After
visiting the caves we continue our journey to Graskop where we will spend
the night in a comfortable hotel.
Day 2
After visiting Pilgrim’s Rest, a historical gold mining town, we
saddle up for our ride along a good gravel road to Bourke’s Luck
Pothole, where whirling waters have formed a series of impressive pools.
From here the Blyde River starts its journey into the Blyde River Canyon.
We continue to a vantage point with spectacular views of the Blyde River
Canyon with its typical “Three Rondavels”. This is followed
by a long downhill cycle into the lowveld. With our bikes loaded we drive
back to Graskop. (70 km, gravel/tar) (B,L).
Day
3
We depart from Graskop and ride in a loop along the edge of the Drakensberg.
We stop at God’s Window, a spectacular view point into the lowveld
1000m below. After a quick side-trip to the Lisbon Falls, we return to
Graskop. A scenic downhill takes us into the lowveld and from here we
transfer to the famous Kruger National Park. We spend the night in comfortable
chalets in a camp within the park. (55 km, tar) (B,L)
Day 4
We do an early morning game drive in the park when the animals are most
active. After breakfast, we do a game drive through the park in our vehicle.
With a bit of luck we might see lion, elephant, zebra, hippo, rhino, giraffe,
buffalo and various species of antelope. In the afternoon you can go on
a mountain bike ride or a bush walk accompanied by a ranger, an unforgettable
experience! (B)
Day
5
We depart from the Kruger National Park in the late morning and drive
by bus to Tzaneen, a small town surrounded by beautiful subtropical vegetation.
We spend two nights in a beautiful country-house hotel high up in the
Magoebaskloof valley. A short bike ride takes us through the beautiful
indigenous forest. (20 km, gravel) (B)
Day 6
This fairly mountainous day takes us along the Ebenezer Dam and through
the green George’s Valley down into Tzaneen. We cycle through the
dense forest of Magoebaskloof until we reach the impressive Debegeni Waterfall,
a good spot to cool off. The rainforest offers welcoming shade as we climb
back to the hotel. (87 km, tar/gravel) (B)
Day 7
After breakfast we transfer to Johannesburg from where our flight leaves
to Cape Town (not included in price). We are taken from the airport to
the green wine town of Wellington. We spend the night in cozy chalets
on a wine farm. (B)
Day
8
We cycle over the picturesque Bainskloof Pass (601 m) and along the imposing
Hex River Mountains to Tulbagh, a historic village against the backdrop
of the 2078 m Winterhoek Mountain. The main road boasts plenty of fine
example of Cape Dutch architecture. On a good tar road we cycle up the
Mitchell’s Pass (490 m) to Ceres, the centre of one of the greatest
deciduous fruit areas in the Cape. We stay in a guest house in town. (102
km, tar) (B)
Day 9
We ride over the Gydo Pass (1018 m) to the beginning of the rocky Cedarberg
mountain range. On a quiet gravel road we pass fascinating sandstone formations
before we reach our chalets at the banks of a small river. We spend two
nights in this wilderness. (90 km, tar/gravel) (B, L, D)
Day
10
Today you have a choice: You can either go for a walk through the extraordinary
Wolfberg Cracks to the Wolfberg Arch (6-7 hrs) or you relax alongside
the river. In the afternoon we take a look at an eroded and bizarre-looking,
typical sandstone cave of the Cedarberg. Here you will be able to see
some well preserved Bushman paintings. (B, L, D)
Day 11
After breakfast we ride up to a plateau parallel to the main crest of
the Cedarberg mountain range. We cross several crystal-clear streams,
which are ideal for a quick dip to cool off. In the small town of Eselbank,
time seems to have stood still: thatched-roof stone cottages, horse carts,
clay ovens... . A long downhill ride takes us to the Rhenish mission station
of Wupperthal. This picturesque, small village in the isolation of the
Cedarberg is now under the Methodist church administration. We visit the
village and the shoe factory of Wupperthal. Accommodation is in chalets
on a guest farm outside the village. (50 km, gravel) (B, L, D)
Day 12
On a gentle slope we climb the Pakhuis Pass (905m). A downhill takes us
to Clanwilliam, famous for its herbal “Rooibos”tea . We load
the bikes and transfer to Cape Town where we stay for three nights in
a comfortable guest house close to the city. (35 km, gravel/tar) (B)
Day
13
Today we will visit the Cape of Good Hope. Along the way we will stop
over at the African Penguin colony at the Boulders Beach along the Indian
Ocean. A hike takes us from the Cape of Good Hope to Cape Point, where
Indian and Atlantic Ocean meet. Seagulls and Cape cormorants as well as
ostrich, various species of antelope and rock dassies can be seen. On
the way back we cycle the spectacular coastal road known as Chapman’s
Peak and down into the fishing village of Hout Bay back to Cape Town.
(62 km, tar) (B)
Day 14
After visiting the famous Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden we hike up Table
Mountain, Cape Town’s most famous landmark (4 hrs.) Here we enjoy
fantastic views of the City and the Atlantic and Indian Ocean. We return
to the city by cable car. We go for a short tour of the inner city, visiting
the Castle, Parade, Parliament Gardens, Greenmarket Square and Malay Quarter.
For dinner we recommend an African restaurant with an excellent menu from
many countries of this continent. (B)
Day 15
The morning is at your own disposal. Depending on your return flight you
can do a township tour and visit the kindergarten supported by AFRICAN
BIKERS. You get to know the people living in the townships at first hand.
In the afternoon we transfer you to Cape Town International Airport, where
this exciting tour ends. (B)
