African Bikers has been offering the classic Namibia Tour of 14 days duration since 2015. On this tour, you will bypass the Fish River Canyon, thereby shortening the journey by 1013km. Namibia is renowned for its rich diversity of national parks and wildlife reserves as well as its unique landscapes and vegetation. While on the classic Namibia Tour, you will cycle and hike through the Namib Desert and the desolate Naukluft Mountains, and in Swakopmund, you will go back in time to the period of German colonialism. You will cycle to Namibia’s famous landmark, the Spitzkoppe, and at Twyfelfontein, be overawed by the ancient Khoisan rock engravings. One will also go on a game safari in the renowned Etosha National Park. The classic Namibia Tour offers a unique opportunity to experience these phenomenal Namibian wonders firsthand while cycling on routes selected especially for you and allowing you to experience these wonders from a perspective other than the usual bus.

Itinerary 2019

Day 1 Arrival in Namibia

Upon your arrival at the Hosea Kutako International Airport in Windhoek, you will be met by your tour guide, who will transfer you through the Khomas Highlands to a beautiful located lodge 3* at Lake Oanob.

Day 2 Bike Tour along the Great Escarpment

Transfer to the Zarishoogte Mountain Pass, where the ancient Namib Desert commences. Traverse karakul sheep and goat country, passing ostrich and karakul sheep farms en route, before arriving at a lodge 3*. Use the afternoon to relax at the poolside or take a walk around the property. (50km, hg 310m, gravel road) (B,L)

Day 3 Bike Tour through the Oldest Desert in the World

This bike tour takes us to the red dunes of Sossusvlei in the Namib Naukluft National Park (23km, hg 10m, tar), where there is an unique display of colours in the morning sun. Undertake an interesting desert hike and visit the Sesriem Canyon. Thereafter transfer to Solitaire. Accommodation for two consecutive nights will be at a lodge close by. (B,L)

Day 4 Bike Tour through the Rocky Naukluft Mountains

In the morning, cycle through the impressive Buellsport Gorge with its 457m to 640m high sandstone Walls and relax at the poolside in the afternoon. During sunset we will take a walk to weaver bird nests and enjoy a Sundowner drink. (44km, hg 100m, gravel road) (B,L)

Day 5 Bike Tour to the Kuiseb Canyon River Oasis

Cycle to the geologically interesting Gaub and Kuiseb Canyon, where ostriches and gemsboks might cross our path. Transfer to the town of Swakopmund lying at the edge of the cool Atlantic Ocean, its architecture dating back to the German colonial period. Accommodation for two consecutive nights will be at a hotel 3* close to the Atlantic Ocean. (45 km, hg +150m, gravel road) (B,L)

Day 6 Bike Tour to the Moon Landscape and the largest Welwitschia mirabilis

Traversing the Namib Naukluft National Park, you will see living stones known as lithops, the Moon Landscape, and the largest Welwitschia mirabilis plant ever discovered. The afternoon will be at leisure. The guide will be available to give you additional tips and hints of what to do. (41 km, hg +360m, gravel road) (B,L)

Day 7 Bike Tour to the Spitzkoppe

Transfer to Usakos from where you will cycle to Namibia’s landmark, the prominent Spitzkoppe, in the flat plains. Another short road transfer takes us to the mining town of Uis, where accommodation will be in chalets at a simple guest house. (B,L) (50 km, hg +100m, gravel road)

Day 8 Bike Tour through the Damaraland

Upon reaching Damaraland, you cycles along the imposing Brandberg, with some luck, you might see the rare desert elephant en route. You will also encounter Herero women selling handmade crafts and semi-precious stones. Transfer into the Damaraland, where accommodation for two consecutive nights will be in thatched chalets of a lodge. (B,L) (65 km, hg +450m, gravel road)

Day 9 The Twyfelfontein World Heritage Site

In the morning, explore the ancient Khoisan rock engravings at Twyfelfontein, another UNESCO World Heritage Site, where you will walk along the Dancing Kudu and the Lion Tail routes. Thereafter, cycle to the Organ Pipes and the Burnt Mountain. In the afternoon, we meet a representative of the Twyfelfontein Conservancy. In relation to its size Namibia has set aside the largest surface of private and public nature reserves in the world. A conservancy, in which human and larger wild mammals live together, offers the locals a better share in the burgeoning tourism sector and helps protecting game from poaching, making this concept a success. Day 10 Bike Tour between table mountains to the unique Vingerklip column

Transfer to the Petrified Forest. Undertake a bike excursion through a Mopane forest, passing the many table-like mountains en route to the 22m high freestanding stack, the Vingerklip column, which is regarded as a famous natural monument. Stay at a lodge close by. (51 km, hg +110m, gravel road) (B,L)

Day 11 Safari in the Etosha National Park

A transfer takes us to the Etosha National Park. Except for the buffalo, we can view the ‘Big 4’: elephant, lion, leopard and rhino. In addition, we can see cheetah, jackal, giraffe and large herds of common zebra and springbok. Accommodation will be at a lodge 3* close to Etosha. (B)

Day 12 More game viewing in the Etosha National Park

We spend half the day on safari in an open game vehicle. a short walk to the pan is also included, and is the highlight of the day. The afternoon remains at leisure. We can undertake another game drive in the late afternoon, should this be requested. (B)

Day 13 Return to Windhoek

After breakfast, depart to Windhoek, taking a break en route to visit the Okahandja hand craft market. Accommodation in Windhoek will be at a guest house 2-3* close to the city centre. (B)

Day 14 Windhoek City Tour and Return Journey

You will have the possibility to take a tour of the city, if your flight time allows it. Your cycling holiday with African Bikers will end with your transfer to the Hosea Kutako International Airport in Windhoek. (B)

Hints

Travel Information:
All bike trails are on selected gravel tracks, which are generally in a good condition. Depending on the weather conditions, the tracks could become uneven, but African Bikers can remain flexible due to the constant and close vehicle back-up. A reasonable state of fitness is required to be able to cycle along these trails. It is the dry season in Namibia during the periods stated above. The day temperatures can vary between 27°C to 35°C and at night the temperature can drop to around -1°C to 10°C in the desert.
