Cycling tour to the North of Namibia in 14 days

NEW: Bike tour through the north of Namibia! Experience Namibia from a cyclist's perspective with us. Impressive landscapes, the varied Damaraland, the seclusion of the Kaokoland, the Himba nomads, wild animals that live without protective fences, the warm hospitality ... – Individual and group travel

Savanna landscapes with villages of the Herero, Damara, Himba and Ovambo characterize the fertile center and the north of the country. Wildlife is also at home in the dense bush, so the safaris to the desert elephants in Hoanib Valley and the Etosha Pan are highlights of the trip. Fascinating are the rugged walls of the Waterberg Plateau, the piled Ugab terraces with the Vingerklip Needle and the Epupa Falls in the far north on the border with Angola. During the trip, we have often planned two nights in one location to discover the surroundings and its people in more detail.

Tour schedule 2020

km = kilometre, am = total altitude meters to cycle per day

Day 1 12.09. Arrival in Namibia

At Windhoek Airport you will be greeted by your tour guide. Drive south of the city to the Heroes’ Acre, a memorial to all Namibians killed by colonization and apartheid. Drive through Windhoek to Okapuka Ranch. On a first safariiIn the fertile highlands around Windhoek we can experience wild animals such as zebras, giraffes, antelopes and in a separate area also a cheetah feeding. Okapuka Ranch (driving time 1.5 hours)

Day 2 13.09. Bike ride to the Waterberg Plateau

With the vehicle travel north just before Otjiwarongo. On a quiet country road we cycle through an open bush savannah to the Waterberg Plateau. The water-rich slopes provide food for a variety of plants and trees, and interesting bird species such as grey lourie or yellow-billed hornbill can be found here. All this we can experience on an afternoon hike. NWR Waterberg Camp (B, L) (driving time 2.5 hours) (bike 55 km, 110 am, tar/gravel road) (walking time 1 hour)

Day 3 14.09. Bike tour to the Vingerklip rock needle

At sunrise, it is worth climbing the Waterberg Plateau. We have an impressive view over the seemingly endless expanse. After breakfast, drive northwest to the upper Ugab River. At the time of the occupation of Namibia, the people of Damara were forced to settle in this part, so we cycle past a few goat and cattle farms. The widespread mopane trees provide welcoming shade. Our aim is the 30m high free standing rock needle Vingerklip, which is one of the natural wonders of Namibia. Then a short transfer to our lodge for one night. Damara Mopane Lodge 4* (B, L) (driving time 2.5 hours) (bike 69 km, 140 am, tar/gravel road) (walking time 1.5 hours)

Day 4 15.09. Bike tour through the Ugab terraces to Khorixas

The bike tour continues through the Ugab terraces and later through a hilly bush landscape to Khorixas. After a lunch break our vehicle takes us to the petrified forest. 250 million years ago, large, pine-like trees were brought here by water from the center of Africa. We can also discover some Welwitschia mirabilis here. Continue in the lowlands of the Damara Land to a lodge, where we stay for two nights. Twyfelfontein Lodge 3* (B, L, D) (driving time 2 hours) (bike 57 km, 260 am, gravel road)

Day 5 16.09. Bike ride to Twyfelfontein and on the lodge grounds

In the morning, visit the famous rock engravings of Twyfelfontein, recently named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Khoi San carved the sandstone in only a few places in southern Africa. Walk the “Lion Tail” route. Then ride to the basalt columns near the “Burnt Mountain”. The afternoon is spent relaxing by the pool. If you like, you can ride a 10 km bike course on the lodge grounds in the cooler evening hours, where springboks are often seen. Twyfelfontein Lodge 3* (B, D) (travel time 0.5 hours) (bike 17 km, 90 am, gravel road)

Day 6 17.09. Bike tour through northern Damaraland

Transfer to Palmwag and continue north. On a small mountain pass we unload the bikes. Slightly downhill we ride through an acacia-rich landscape. Often you can spot giraffes and springboks whilst on the bike. The final destination is the stylish Khowarib Lodge, where we stay for two nights. The afternoon is for relaxation or a hike can be made on the lodge grounds. Khowarib Lodge 3* (B, L, D) (travel time 3 hours) (bike 43 km, 100 am, gravel road)

Day 7 18.09. Safari to the desert elephants

The open 4×4 vehicle takes down the Hoanib Valley on this day trip. The desert elephants are smaller than their cousins from the Etosha National Park, but true experts in finding groundwater. With a bit of luck, we can watch them digging for water. Ostriches, springboks and oryx antelopes have also adapted to the dry conditions. Khowarib Lodge 3* (B, L, D) (travel time approx. 6 hours)

Day 8 19.09. Bike ride to the land of the Himba

A transfer takes us up to higher elevations. We cycle through a hilly bush landscape to Opuwo, the trading center of the Himba people. While people used to walk in search for fertile pastures, in recent decades some Himba have settled permanently. Instead of traditional cattle breeding, they try to get breed goats, as they are better able to cope with the drought caused by lack of rainfall. Accommodation is in a lodge in Opuwo. Opuwo Country Lodge 3* (B, L) (driving time 1.5 hours) (bike 72 km, 440 am, gravel road)

Day 9 20.09. Bike ride to the Epupa River

After breakfast, transfer north to the village of Okongwati. We unload the bikes and on a flat, later descending road, we cycle through the savannah landscape down to the Kunene River. Here we often meet cattle herders of the Himba. From the beautiful Epupa Falls Lodge we have great views over the waterfalls and towards neighboring Angola. We stay for two nights. Epupa Falls Lodge (B, L, D) (driving time 1.5 hours) (bike 71 km, 290 am, gravel road)

Day 10 21.09. Day at leisure

The day is at leisure. In the morning, while visiting the Himba people in the neighborhood, you can learn more about their culture, their language, their diet, and their beliefs. You can also hike along the river to see the crocodiles or we can do a bike ride along the Kunene. All excursions are optional. Epupa Falls Lodge (B, D) (walking time 1 hour)

Day 11 22.09. Bike ride along the Etosha National Park

A long transfer takes us back to the southern edge of the Etosha National Park. In the afternoon we unload the bikes and cycle through a hilly bush landscape to our accommodation. Kaoko Bush Lodge (B, L) (driving time 4.5 hours) (bike 35 km, 250 am, tar road)

Day 12 23.09. Safari in the Etosha National Park

Transfer into the famous Etosha National Park. Dominated by the mostly empty, huge Salt Lake, the animals live close to artificial and natural waterholes. Except for buffalos, we can see the “Big 5” here as well as cheetahs, jackals, giraffes, plains zebras and springboks. In the afternoon we do a safari in open off-road vehicle. We stay for a night in a lodge close to the national park. Etosha Safari Lodge 3* (B, L) (travel time 5 hours)

Day 13 24.09. Back to Windhoek

After breakfast we drive through the fertile highland back to Windhoek. We stay in a quiet guesthouse near the city center. In the afternoon during a city tour we look at the castle Alte Feste and visit an arts and culture center. In the evening a meal is planned in the N.I.C.E restaurant. In the “Namibian Institute for Culinary Education” aspiring Namibian chefs can show what they have learned. Windhoek Gardens Guest House 3* (B) (Driving time 4 hours)
