Train cruise and E-Bike cycle tour through South Africa and Swaziland

Travel in the comfort of your own compartment through Southern Africa so there is no need to pack all the time. Easy cycling routes with your E Bike, on foot and in 4x4 vehicles you will explore the fascinating landscapes the region has to offer. – Individual and group travel

Train & E-Bike bicycle cruise through South Africa and the Kingdom of Swaziland – From Pretoria to the Cape of Good Hope

Day 1 02.10.19

After arriving at Johannesburg OR Tambo Airport where you will be welcomed by your tour guide . Transfer to your hotel in Pretoria where you can rest from the long flight. (D)

Day 2 03.10.19

After breakfast, transfer to the private Rovos Rail train station where you will check into your hotel on wheels. Later you will go on a half day tour through the capital city of Pretoria and you will discover the Township Soweto by bike.
In the afternoon you will be welcomed on board the Shongololo Express. After you have made yourself comfortable in your cabin, you will enjoy dinner on board of the train, whilst marveling at the moving landscape of the Highveld. The train will take a breathtaking descend into the Lowveld towards Nelspruit, where it will be parked overnight. (BLD)

Day 3 04.10.19

After breakfast on the train you will visit the historical gold town of Pilgrim’s Rest. Starting from Graskop, you will cycle along the Drakensberg escarpment and visit the Pinnacle, a tremendous stone pillar, as well as “God’s Window”, from where you will have a vast view all the way to Kruger National Park and Mozambique. Next up is a short hike through the rainforest.
Cycle onwards to Bourke‘s Luck Potholes, an imposing system of potholes, through which the Blyde River makes its way to the Blyde River Canyon. Thereafter, continue cycling along the Panorama Route to the Three Rondavels view point which affords one of the most spectacular views of the Blyde River Canyon. A transfer brings us back to Nelspruit where dinner will be served on board of the train. (BD)

Day 4 05.10.19

After breakfast you will leave the train at Malelane and go on a full day safari into the famous Kruger National Park, where one may see lion, elephant, zebra, hippo, rhino, giraffe, buffalo, antelope, wild dogs as well as a colourful array of birds and diverse vegetation. After an adventurous day, you are heading back to have dinner on the train, which continues travelling towards Swaziland. (BD)

Day 5 06.10.19

With only 17.000 square kilometres, the Kingdom of Swaziland offers a broad variety of different landscapes and people who will welcome you with an open heart.
A short bus transfer will take us to Mpaka where you start cycling on quiet country roads past many kraals before reaching the famous Swazi candles workshop where the beautiful candles are made to local music. You continue cycling to Mlilwane Nature Reserve. You will cycle in the Nature Reserve while observing zebra, blesbok, impala, ostrich, and hippo en route – a breathtaking experience. A transfer brings you back to the train in Mpaka. After the border formalities your journey continues in South Africa. (BD)

Day 6 07.10.19

Early in the morning the train arrives in Zululand. The Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Game Reserve is known worldwide for its white and black rhino species protection program. You undertake a safari in an open vehicle. In addition to the BIG 5 – lion, elephant, rhino, leopard and buffalo, the beautiful lowland nyala antelope can also be found here. (BD)

Day 7 08.10.19

After breakfast, you cycle from Mtubamtuba to iSimangaliso Wetland Park, a World Heritage Site. The lagoon is home to crocodiles and hippos as well as the African fish eagle, the goliath heron and many other bird species. The hippos sometimes even visit the streets of St Lucia! Afterwards you can go for a short walk in the rainforest. In the afternoon, you will visit Cape Vidal in the iSimangaliso Wetland Park. One may spot elephant, buffalo, duiker, kudu, antelope and diverse bird species. The beach is protected by a reef and therefore one can enjoy a safe swim. In the evening you will be back on board the train and enjoy your dinner. (BD)

Day 8 09.10.19

After breakfast you are leaving the train to cycle from Durban along the beautiful North Coast. Later you can explore the town area and the Indian spice market. We highly recommend visiting the uShaka Marineworld Aquarium as it is the sixth largest in the world.
Sharks and devilfish are amongst the attractions. Alternatively, you can visit Durban’s beaches, which are safe from currents and sharks and invite you to have a refreshing swim or surfing session. In the afternoon we are back on our rolling hotel heading for the Drakensberg Mountains. (BD)

Day 9 10.10.19

Today you are leaving the train in Ladysmith to go on a full day bike trip through the uKhahlambra Drakensberg Mountains which are part of the UNESCO Natural World Heritage Site. The route takes you through lush farmlands and past many Zulu Kraals towards the spectacular scenery of the so-called “Amphitheatre”. Here, the Tugela River falls a stunning 1000m over the rock face and begins its journey towards the Indian Ocean. (BD)

Day 10 11.10.19

After arriving in Bloemfontein, you are invited for an excursion through the sixth largest city in South Africa. You will visit the Women Monument and the Anglo-Boer Museum. Bloemfontein furthermore is the judicative city of South Africa where the highest Appeal Court will be found. (BD)

Day 11 12.10.19

After breakfast you cycle from Kimberley train station to the so-called “Big Hole”, the largest man-made hole in the world. During the diamond rush in the beginning of 19th century, diggers excavated over 14 Million carat diamonds from here. It was here that Cecil John Rhodes and Barney Barnato fought about the diamond excavation rights. You continue cycling to Wildebeeskuil, where fascinating rock art of the indigenous San-Bushmen will be found. In the afternoon you will be back on board our train to continue further South.

Day 12 13.10.19

Today you will spend time on board and enjoy the beautiful scenery of the Great Karoo semi desert while heading towards the Indian Ocean and Port Elizabeth. (BLD)

Day 13 14.10.19

In the morning you will arrive in Oudtshoorn, the ostrich capital of South Africa. A short transfer brings you to the impressive Cango Caves. After exploring the extensive cave system on a 1-hour tour, you will cycle along lush fruit and tobacco fields to an ostrich farm. On a guided tour you will learn more about these fascinating, tall birds.
After lunch a transfer through the Klein Karoo semi desert brings you to the beautiful Montagu Pass where you will get back on the bike and ride down the historic road. You can enjoy great views of the coast and the surrounding area. Our today’s bike trip ends in George where the train is already waiting for you. (BD)

Day 14 15.10.19

After breakfast you start cycling from George along the historical Cape Road through valleys of indigenous forest. The top of the plateau with its green grass offers ideal conditions for dairy farms. With great views towards the 1600m high Outeniqua mountains you are heading to the beautiful beach of Wilderness where we can dip our feet into the Indian Ocean. A transfer brings you back to George, from where our train continues along the breathtaking coastal track towards Mossel Bay. (BLD)

Day 15 16.10.19

We are leaving the train early morning at a wine estate in Ashton. You will cycle through the beautiful Breedetal towards Bonnievale. A transfer brings you back to the ocean to the coastal town of Hermanus. With some luck, you might be able to spot whales here, who visit the coast between June and November. After lunch, we cycle from Kleinmond along the Kogelberg Nature Reserve towards Betty’s Bay. Here you will visit one of the two land-based colonies of the African Penguin. The cycling route near the Atlantic Ocean to Gordon’s Bay offers wonderful vistas of Table Mountain and the Cape of Good Hope. A transfer brings you back to the train in Worcester in time for dinner. Day 16 17.10.19

After 4000km our train arrives at its final destination Cape Town, an incredible sight. After saying farewell to our board crew a transfer brings you to our hotel in Cape Town. During a city tour, you will see all the interesting sights that the Mother City has to offer: The Parade, the Castle, Town Hall, Greenmarket Square, Parliament Garden, Art- and History museum as well as the Malay Quarter and the Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden, one of the most beautiful botanical gardens, which is in bloom during October. Weather permitting you will take the cable car up to the top of the most famous landmark Cape Town’s – Table Mountain. The view from up here is just breathtaking. Our dinner today will be served in a traditional African Restaurant. (BD)

Day 17 18.10.19

During a township tour in the morning, you will have the unique opportunity to visit our Kindergarten Noluthando in the township of Khayelitsha which is supported by AFRICAN BIKERS.
You get a lasting impression of Cape Town’s largest township and its people. You carry on along False Bay to the Boulder’s penguin colony and the Cape of Good Hope National Park. A short walk takes us to Cape Point. From here you will cycle along the Atlantic seaboard back to Cape Town. Enjoy a picnic close to the water’s edge in Scarborough. The coastal route via Chapman‘s Peak Drive and Hout Bay is truly one of the most breathtaking routes in South Africa. It is also where the annual Cape Town Cycle Tour Race with over 35,000 participants takes place. (BD)

Tag 18 19.10.19

In the morning you will have some time for shopping at the famous V&A Waterfront. You can also visit the recently opened MOCCA Museum with its modern African art collection presented by German art collector Jochen Zeitz. Around lunch time it will be time to say goodbye to Southern Africa. A transfer takes you to Cape Town International Airport where this beautiful train cruise ends. (B)
