Noluthando – The Place of Love and Care
Day Care Center in the township of Khayelitsha
On January 17, 1994, Mavis Mbaba established a day care center for 45 children in her private home in Khayelitsha, the largest township in Cape Town. In January 1995, with the support of British Petroleum (BP), a piece of land was rented by the local council and gradually “Noluthando -The Place of Love and Care” was created.
Meanwhile 250 children from 1 to 6 years old are looked after between 6am and 6pm for a monthly fee of €15 to €20. The children get 2 meals a day. 14 kindergarten teachers are employed in the Noluthando Day Care Center, 6 of them (also Mavis Mbaba) are trained according to the Waldorf school principle. After leaving the Day Care Center the majority of the children join the Waldorf school merely 500 m away.
Since September 1998, African Bikers has been supporting the Noluthando Day Care Center in Khayelitsha. Our main task in coordination with Mavis Mbaba is to ensure the ongoing maintenance of the existing infrastructure and to create and improve new infrastructure so that the children can grow up in a hygienic environment suitable for children. To this end, we have built several classrooms and recreation rooms, we have equipped playrooms, arranged for the construction of a playground and a new fence as well as carried out general renovation and repair work in the recent years.
The head of Noluthando Day Care Center, Mavis Mbaba, is responsible for the educational content, teaching as well as food preparations. During the month-long Corona lockdown in South Africa, she saw a great need for cooked meals for “her” children and decided in her own capacity and with financial support through donations to cook and provide a hot meal for children, who otherwise would not have had due to the closure of the day care center and the financial strain of the families: News24 – Article “Feeding Children”
For her endless commitment to the children she was recently awarded the Ackerman Prize “Faces of change”: YouTube – Video “Faces of Change”
